ITASHA JEM

Much like Tokyo’s secretive car and racing subcultures which espouse her, this protagonist is a Japanese folkloric enigma. Until recently, the only consensus is that in circa 1992, “Underground Tokyo” car meets became the mysterious hunting grounds of a new apex predator… We later learn of a fleet of super-charged Itasha, an army of drivers known in the streets as the “Angry Ape Army”, and their origins at the hands of a kitsunetsuki they call, “Itasha Jem”.

Kitsune // Kitsunetsuki // Kitsune-tsuki // The victim is usually said to be a young woman, whom the fox enters beneath her fingernails or through her breasts.

In Japan, an itasha is a car decorated with images of characters from anime, manga, or video games. The decorations usually involve paint schemes and stickers.

Many “itasha” are created as hobbies, as part of the car owners’ individual fan activities related to comic book/video works and characters. Owners express their own secret “love for the characters” using the car as their palette – demonstrating their sense of individuality.
